First Meeting and Minutes of the City of Jefferson
Wednesday, April 17, 1839, at the Courthouse

And so it all began...

Journal of the proceedings of the first board of Aldermen of the City of Jefferson, Missouri, begun, held and convened* in said city, at the courthouse, on the 17th day of April, 1839...

Thomas L. Price was the Mayor.

Minutes of the First Board of Alderman, April 17, 1839
* Convened appears to be the word as written in cursive although other documents from the time frequently use the term begun, held and continued. Whichever is the case, both terms would apparently be accurate because the Board of Aldermen did, in fact, convene for the first time on April 17th, 1839 and they continued to meet subsequently on Thursday, April 18th, Friday, April 19th, Monday, April 22nd and Tuesday, April 23rd, 1839. Summaries of these meetings can be found in the city's Online Ordinance Database.

The minutes pictured above record the city's first ordinance (Ordinance No: 183901) nominating various City officers. Early the next week the city fathers passed an "ordinance to remove the dirt around the court house, anywhere on High street."
